The training, which ran from November 11 to 13, 2025, in Pretoria, aimed to enhance service delivery and deepen participants’ understanding of the Vienna Conventions on Diplomatic and Consular Relations, including privileges, immunities, and the role of honorary consuls in advancing Uganda’s national interests.
The workshop was officially opened by Ambassador Charles Ssentongo, Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who underscored the importance of professionalism, coordination, and adherence to diplomatic protocols in representing Uganda abroad.
He also highlighted the pivotal role of honorary consuls as the country’s frontline representatives in regions where Uganda does not have resident missions.
Bagonza’s presentation focused on the government’s ongoing efforts to engage, connect, and empower Ugandans living abroad, emphasizing initiatives such as diaspora investment facilitation, remittance optimization, skills and knowledge transfer, and entrepreneurship promotion.
The session also explored strategies for strengthening collaboration between the Diaspora Unit, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ugandan missions, aimed at maximizing the diaspora’s contribution to national development.
The workshop is expected to produce actionable recommendations for improving diaspora engagement, enhancing diplomatic coordination, and amplifying Uganda’s presence in the region.
