On the Occasion of Uganda’s 63rd Independence Celebrations and the Launch of the National Alliance of Ugandan Canadian Associations (NAUCA)
Mr Mohammed Bagonza’s speech,
Distinguished guests, fellow Ugandans,
Leaders of the National Alliance of Ugandan Canadian Associations (NAUCA),
Members of the diplomatic corps,
Ladies and gentlemen,
As we mark 63 years since our beloved Uganda attained independence, let’s reflect on the long journey our nation has travelled, from the struggle for liberation, through the challenges of nation-building, to the progress we see today.
Our independence was not a gift; it was a victory earned through courage, sacrifice, and unity of purpose. Our Freedom fighters stood firm against colonial domination, believing that a free Uganda would give every citizen the opportunity to live in dignity and to build a prosperous future.
As we celebrate this day, we must remind ourselves that independence was not merely about the lowering of the Union Jack and the raising of our flag. It is about economic independence, unity, and self-reliance, the pillars upon which our sovereignty stands.
This year’s theme, “63 Years of Independence: A Reason to Double Our Efforts in Sustaining a United and Progressive Nation,” calls upon each of us, at home and abroad, to renew our commitment to that vision. To work harder, to stay united, and to build a country where prosperity is shared by all.
For those of us in the diaspora, this message carries even deeper meaning. You are part of Uganda’s strength, the extended arm of our nation that reaches across continents. Your success, your innovation, and your hard work abroad are a continuation of the struggle for independence, but now fought through enterprise, skill, and knowledge.
That is why the launch of NAUCA is such a proud and historic moment. It represents the next chapter in the Ugandan-Canadian story, a story of unity, vision, and renewed connection.
For too long, our Ugandan communities across Canada have worked hard but separately in different cities, provinces, and associations. The creation of NAUCA brings these efforts under one umbrella, fostering a stronger and more coordinated network that can advocate, collaborate, and empower.
This initiative was born out of a simple but powerful idea: that unity amplifies our voice and multiplies our impact. Through NAUCA, we can strengthen cultural ties, promote Ugandan businesses, support our youth, and speak with one voice on matters that affect Ugandans living in Canada.
As Head of the State House Diaspora Unit, I am deeply proud to have supported this vision and to see it come to fruition. This is not just another organization, it is a bridge between Uganda and its citizens in Canada; a symbol of what can happen when Ugandans come together for the common good.
Let us therefore use this platform to remind ourselves that regardless of political affiliations or regional backgrounds, we are one Uganda. Whether you live in Toronto, Vancouver, or Kampala, we share one flag, one anthem, one destiny.
Back home, the Government is undertaking important reforms to bridge the gap between Uganda and her diaspora:
The National Diaspora Policy is in its final stages and projected to be ready by December. This policy will formalise diaspora engagement, protect your interests, and ensure your voices are heard in national planning.
We have rolled out the Diaspora Data Management System to register and map your skills so that Uganda knows where you are, what you do, and how you can be part of development back home. We have a QR code for you to scan and register.
We now have a Diaspora App and soon, we shall have the Diaspora Call Centre. These will be one-stop centres for services, information, and problem-solving. Whether it’s passports, investment, or consular support, we want you to access government with ease. The app is available on Play Store, Apple Store, and our website www.diasporaaffairs.go.ug. You can also scan our QR code to download the app.
We are also exploring the creation of the Diaspora Fund, inspired by successful regional models, to finance diaspora-led businesses and community projects. Additionally, proposals for diaspora bonds and remittance-linked products are under active consideration. These initiatives will allow you to invest directly in your country’s growth, while also earning safe and reliable returns.
These reforms reflect the mandate of the State House Diaspora Unit: to keep every Ugandan abroad visible, connected, engaged, and empowered.
Uganda’s independence reminds us that our greatest strength lies in our unity. The same unity that freed our nation must now be the force that transforms it. The government can only do so much; real transformation happens when citizens, especially those abroad, join hands and share their skills, ideas, and investments.
When a Ugandan in Canada opens a restaurant, let every Ugandan in that city dine there. When one of you launches a business, let us all support it. When a student graduates, let us mentor them. That is how we build communities that reflect our pride and progress as Ugandans.
We should take inspiration from the Indians and the Chinese, who have built strong, united communities abroad by working together and supporting one another. Their deep sense of patriotism and collective effort toward their countries’ progress is admirable, and it is a lesson we, too, must embrace as we strive to build a stronger and more prosperous Uganda.
NAUCA now gives you the structure to make this happen, to connect Ugandans across provinces, to amplify your voices, and to work closely with your High Commission and the State House Diaspora Unit in advancing our country’s interests.
As we mark this 63rd Independence anniversary, let us honour those who came before us by doubling our efforts, in unity, in service, and in purpose. Let us make Uganda proud wherever we go.
Together, we can sustain a united, peaceful, and progressive Uganda.
For God and My Country.
Mohammed Bagonza
Senior Presidential Advisor / Head, State House Diaspora Unit
