State House intervention secures safe return of Ugandan migrant worker

After cries for help went viral on social media, Prossy Nambalirwa is finally home. Nambalirwa went to work in Saudi Arabia in 2023 with hopes of earning money to support her family, but everything took a turn for the worse.

She faced allegations of torture by her employers, which severely impacted her mental health. Eventually, she found herself helpless in a hospital in Medina, the city where she was working.

In her darkest moments, she experienced a glimmer of hope when she met another Ugandan migrant worker in the hospital. Seeking assistance, she asked for help, and together they recorded a video of her plea to return to Uganda.

The video went viral, drawing significant attention to her situation. Fortunately, her request was answered, thanks to the efforts of the State House Diaspora Unit.

Mr Bagonza Mohammed, the head of the State House Diaspora Unit, collaborated with the Ministry of Gender to ensure Nambalirwa’s safe repatriation to Uganda.

Upon her arrival at Entebbe International Airport, she was warmly welcomed by Mr. Bagonza and Joshua Kyalimpa, the Public Relations Officer from the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development.

Nambalirwa, who was brought through the VIP wing of Entebbe Airport in a wheelchair, expressed immense joy at the reception she received. Her family, including her three children, mother, and father, greeted her with smiles, teary eyes, and heartfelt hugs.

When she touched down at Entebbe Airport, Nambalirwa felt a wave of relief. With tears in her eyes, she recounted the challenges she faced while in Saudi Arabia. She expressed her gratitude to the Government, her family, and everyone who contributed to her return.

“I want to thank President Kaguta Museveni for helping me get back home,” she said, as tears rolled down her cheeks.

During a press conference, Mr Bagonza assured the media and everyone in attendance that the government is taking all necessary measures to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future.

He mentioned that the State House Diaspora Unit was developing a Diaspora Data Management System and a Diaspora App aimed at helping Ugandans living abroad stay connected with their home country.

Additionally, he stated that the government is imposing stricter regulations on labour export companies to eliminate any unscrupulous operators. “As State House Diaspora Unit, we are moving in handy to support the gender ministry and foreign affairs ministry.”

“It’s the role of the Government and the President of Uganda to protect its citizens and their property. Whether you are in Saudi Arabia or Uganda, it’s our responsibility to make sure you live there safely,” said Mr Bagonza.
